Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the indigenous medicine of India, has enjoyed over 5000 years of continuous use and contains knowledge of all aspects of health care. Ayurveda predates all current modern and traditional health care systems. Its knowledge was carried into Tibet and China, giving rise to the development of their current systems of traditional medicine.
 
Ayurveda depicts all creation as being composed of five elements: air, space, fire, water, and earth. In the human body the elements combine in varying proportions to create differing bodily tendencies.

The constitutional tendencies or doshas are called Vata, composed of air and space: Pitta, from fire and Kapha, from earth and water.

 
Most people have a predominance of one or two of the three doshas in their bodies. This natural balance is due to heredity, but can be affected by the foods we eat, the climate in which we live, and our activities.

For example the heat of a tropical climate increases Pitta dosha, because it is composed of the element of fire. Spicy or pungent foods, which increase heat in the body, also increase this dosha, intensifying Pitta qualities of the mind and body, like anger, irritability, heartburn or heat in the body and insomnia. The resulting change in the balance of the doshas, due to accumulation of the various elements can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on an individual's natural constitution.

Once a person knows which doshas predominate naturally in their bodies they can then take responsibility for maintaining their own health.
 

Maharishi Ayurveda

Maharishi Ayurveda is the most ancient and comprehensive system of natural medicine. Formally recognized by the World Health Organization, ayurveda originated in ancient India more than 5,000 years ago. The word "Ayurveda" is made from two Sanskrit roots "Ayu" which means life and "Veda" which means knowledge, the knowledge or science of life.
